Case Study – Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Consulting at the FHWA

The Challenge: The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) needed help collecting and managing road and bridge asset data for portions of the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) roadway system. The Road Inventory Project (RIP) was initiated to organize road condition data collected for every 0.1 mile of the 11,000 miles of roadway and bridges managed by the NPS. The FHWA also needed IT support for its Bridge Inspection and Management Project (BIP).

The Solution: FHWA contracted A.J. Boggs to provide programming, database management, and GIS support to its team in Sterling, Virginia. The team collected and managed road and bridge asset data for the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) roadway system, Regions 8 and 9 Forest Highways, and other federal land management agencies throughout the U.S.

With the use of state-of-the art equipment and engineering expertise, the Road Inventory Project documented the condition of pavements and drainages and produced a video log that is used by the NPS and FHWA in planning improvement projects.

A.J. Boggs & Company created a Route ID Data Verification application that analyzed the Route ID database and produced a report of any anomalies in the data. With this application, the RIP team could verify data on the spot, saving valuable time and reducing travel costs.

The Technologies: ESRI’s ArcGIS, ArcIMS, GPS, Visual Basic, Java Server Pages, JavaScript, Visual Studio, Oracle, Section 508 Compliance, Microsoft SQL Server, and Access.
